Back in the Day: Old School Baton

It’s taken me a little while to comply, but here it finally is. My answer to the meme started, and passed over to me, by Andy Rutledge of Stylegala proportions.

As Andy puts it himself…

We’ve all got embarassing photos of ourselves from back in the day and it’s time to whip them out for all to see. What was cool then ain’t cool now – or – we were just way too geeky for our own good. Re-live those halcyon days and give thanks that they’re long gone.

My answer

Place/Year: Thornhill, Ontario, Canada – 1990

Context: Back in my high school transition years, all efforts were made to look cool when off to school. The great thing about this picture is that it shows my transition from an MC-Hammer lovin’ wannabe, to a Grateful Dead worshipping hippy. Notice the backwards ball cap, air jordan sneakers, and very ‘in’ faded Levis jeans, with a long-sleeve t-shirt tucked in nicely.

How does this photo relate to your future as a designer?: My obsession with Air Jordan sneakers led me to explore Nike’s marketing and design techniques, and it was then that I discovered my love for design details and branding, as I made all attempts to design the next “cool” sneaker for Nike by sketching out shoes and logos during class.

  • Rob – Well, you can always put up a baby picture!

Alex – Funny you should think that, because at the time I probably thought “what a tough” guy I was.
